Unforgettable Conversations; People You Never Forget

Most conversations are soon forgotten.  I have a hard time remembering what my wife told me at breakfast later that same day, so it’s a miracle if I remember a conversation several days afterwards.
Despite our short term memory when it comes to conversations, there are rare instances in life when a conversation is so meaningful and impactful that you know instantly that it will never be forgotten.  I recently had a memorable encounter with author Digger Cartwright about an unforgettable conversation that turned into his latest book, Conversations on the Bench.
Conversations on the Bench is about his conversations with a larger than life man named Sebastian, who was one of the leaders of a think tank and an inspiration to many.  The book covers 25 lessons that were learned from Sebastian in a story format.  The lessons in the book include: swallow your pride, always give your personal best, don’t be afraid of failure, don’t let others drag you down, and many more.
When asked about the conversations that Digger Cartwright had with Sebastian, Digger had only positive things to say about their encounters and about the man that was Sebastian.  Digger stated, “And when you read the conversations and understand the lessons he was offering up, you really see Sebastian for the warm, caring, and insightful guy that he was.  There are very few people like him in the world.  If you’re lucky enough to find someone like him, don’t take them for granted.  They have a lot to say, and we can learn a lot from listening to what they have to say.”
The book and talk with Digger inspired me to think of the most unforgettable conversation that I’ve ever had and why it was meaningful to me.
My Most Memorable Conversation
The most memorable conversation I ever had was a short one, but powerful one that I am thankful for.  I was in the third grade and was being chased home by several older men and a bully that I used to consider a friend.  With tears streaming down my face and not knowing what would happen next after taking a solid beating already, a car stopped on a side street in front of where I was running.  A man
hopped out of the passenger side seat with blue jeans and a jean jacket that were covered in paint.  The man walked up to me and asked if I was okay.  I looked down and saw that his hands were also covered in paint and that he must have just finished working for the day.  He must have witnessed some of the incident as he looked at me and said “you have to stand up for yourself and don’t ever let anyone bring you down.”  The man then walked me three blocks until I felt safe enough to walk the rest of the way home.  I don’t know his name or who he was, but the impact he left on me from that one day will never be forgotten.
What impact are you making on those you have conversations with?
You may never have a book written about your words of wisdom or comfort a scared child, but the words you say to others can make a significant difference in their lives.
